Zohran Mamdani is pictured above. He is a candidate for Mayor of New York City, and is running as the official candidate of the Democratic Party. Former Governor Andrew Cuomo is widely considered to be Mamdani's main opposition. Mamdani beat Cuomo in the Democratic primary, in June, but Cuomo has come back as an independent candidate. The election is coming right up in November. We'll soon know who has won!
The September 2025 edition of The Nation Magazine had an extensive and very thoughtful review of the Mamdani candidacy. I never know whether online sources that I have no trouble accessing myself, may, in fact, be inaccessible to others, so please do note this paywall warning. Maybe the link I have just provided won't get you there, but I hope that it does. I really do think that the article I have linked is well worth reading. If Mamdani wins, it will be "populism" that will have prevailed. That's how The Nation sees it.
What will also have prevailed, if Mamdani wins, is the idea that "anything is possible" in our political life. A young, progressive, candidate who wasn't even born in the United States, and who is Muslim, might become the next Mayor of New York City. That would be pretty extraordinary, and I would be particularly happy to have such an electoral proof of that "anything is possible" hypothesis.
I, personally, have no doubt of that "anything is possible" assertion, but real events can do a lot to help make that obvious to everyone.
Don't you think we need to "change the world"? I do, and I know we can! Maybe we'll see a demonstration that it can indeed be done, in just the next couple of weeks.
