#299 / Jesus' Wife

The Book Of Longings, by Sue Monk Kidd, is a book about Jesus (and about Jesus' wife). Jesus' wife is named "Ana" in the book. The story is essentially her story, the story of her longings, and is not the story of Jesus.

The Bible makes the claim that Jesus was both fully human and fully God - both of these, simultaneously. When we read about Jesus, if we do, we almost invariably are reading about a person who embodies both the human and the divine, simultaneously.

Monk's book is, remarkably, different. The story of Jesus' life, told by his wife, is primarily Ana telling her own story, and so the book talks only about the "human" Jesus. It is a deeply researched story, historically and factually accurate, and is convincing. As I read the book, Jesus came alive to me in a way that he most often doesn't, in the Bible stories. He came alive to me in his fully human life.

This is a good book for me to recommend on a Sunday, and recommend it I do.
