#212 / Socialism Versus Capitalism

A Facebook Friend published the image above, just shortly before our recent July 4th holiday, which marked the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.

I majored in history in college, and if I am remembering things right, when we created our democratic republic - by and after the American Revolution - we did not identify our newly-created government as either "socialist" or "capitalist."

I want to suggest today, even though our memorable 250th anniversary has passed, that Americans should double down on the governmental system that we initiated after that revolution. One name for it is "democratic self-government." Some call it "democracy." I do prefer the "self-government" designation, since I think that's the main point.

Just as I deplore our ever more partisan and polarized politics - so often reduced, now, to Red v. Blue, or Republican v. Democrat - I deplore the idea that self-government needs to take a back seat to some economic system. Bi-polar disorder comes in various flavors. What system do you believe in?

Let's stop thinking that we need to pick some economic system as the key to government.

Let's believe in ourselves!
