#267 / The Talking Circle (An "In Person" Event)

What the above picture from The New York Times is providing us is a glimpse into the one-bedroom, one bathroom New York City apartment of Gloria Steinem. If we are to believe the headline on the story in The Times, which ran in the Sunday, September 21, 2025 edition, this is "The Living Room Where History Still Happens." Steinem calls this gathering her "talking circle."

Small groups of people, meeting regularly, talking about major social, economic, and political challenges, then taking action, is how we actually make history; it's how we change the world. You can take it from me, or you can take it from Margaret Mead. She's more of an authority than I am. We're both right.

Here is something from the article about Steinem's "talking circle" that I think is worth emphasizing - Steinem certainly emphasizes this, and says that it's vital:

Gathering in person remains central to Ms. Steinem’s philosophy. “My brain has not converted to A.I.,” she joked. “We don’t experience empathy in the same way unless we are physically together” (emphasis added).

Text messages don't do it. Online Zoom calls don't do it. Neither do social media posts. Podcasts don't do it, either. What does?

Gathering In Person!
