#105 / Endgame

This Derrick Jensen guy does not have a cheery message! Someone said I should check him out. I did.

You should watch a YouTube video was the suggestion. It's pretty strong stuff!

If you like what Derrick Jensen has to say, you can move on to Deep Green Resistance

The essence of the Derrick Jensen message is captured in twenty different "premises." They're listed right here in Wikipedia. Click the link to read them all. Here is one of them, by way of introduction. It's Premise #8. It's definitely consistent with my Two Worlds hypothesis:

Premise Eight: The needs of the natural world are more important than the needs of the economic system.

I think we had better start taking that one to heart.

  1. More important to whom... or what? What is the measure of importance? What determines the "needs" of the natural world? The problem with this kind of statement is that it is as anthropocentric as that which is criticized.

Furthermore, there is no "THE economic system." There are many economic systems, including those active in the non-human world. When leveling criticism, specificity is desired.

I am put off by Jensen’s constant obsession with violence, especially of the “Here, I’ll hold your coat while you go attack that armed mob over there.” variety.

Most of Jensen’s arguments consist of the logical fallacy of affirming the consequent.

The question is not “Are these valid premises?” The ever unanswered question is “If these assertions are true, what can we do about them?”
