I find that some of the best political analysis available on American politics - analysis that really "tells it like it is" about politics in the United States - comes from The Guardian, which is published in Great Britain. Awhile back, for instance, The Guardian carried a story by Norman Solomon, entitled, "The Spectre Of Gen Z Socialism Is Haunting The World … According To The Economist."
The article from The Economist, referenced in Solomon's story in The Guardian, was titled, "How To Fight Back Against Gen-Z Socialism." That was a cover story in The Economist, apparently, and here's the image that graced the cover:
Solomon summarized The Economist's argument this way (emphasis added):
“The first step,” the Economist urges, “is for free-market liberals to stop apologising. A series of popular criticisms of capitalism, each containing a grain of truth, has in aggregate obscured the fundamental wisdom that private enterprise is at the root of human prosperity.”
What is my reaction to the idea advanced by The Economist, and the claim that Gen-Z socialism is "haunting the world"? Here's my reaction: "Don't I wish!" Unfortunately, I am not seeing much of a Gen-Z revolt against the way the billionaires have preempted self-government in our fair country, cutting back on general social benefits while lowering taxes for the very rich. We can, however, hope!
Norman Solomon seems equally unimpressed with the concerns raised by The Economist. I will quote, below, what Solomon says in response to The Economist's complaint that Gen-Z criticisms miss all the great benefits of capitalism (benefits, however, that don't extend to everyone, thus making problematic any claim that private enterprise is the cause of human prosperity, since "human" does seem to be an all-inclusive category.
Solomon's response follows (emphasis added):
So come on, you free-market liberals. Recognize the danger that the youngest adult generation on both sides of the Atlantic is being swayed by the siren songs of socialism just because they don’t like vast income inequality and all the human suffering that comes with it. The Economist has sounded the alarm. Now it’s up to you to rescue us from the clear and present threat of social equity.
