Above, you see a picture of the online headline of a recent story in The New York Times. The hardcopy version of the headline reads as follows: "Comet's Close Encounter Takes Strange Turn To Alien Speculation."
It is true that speculation about extra-terrestrial life - and aliens from outer space - seems to be burgeoning. Kim Kardashian isn't the only one beguiled by the idea of meeting up with some of those space aliens. The Romero Institute, for instance, with its headquarters here in my hometown of Santa Cruz, California, has traditionally advertised itself as an organization devoted to "building movements that win social and environmental justice."
The most recent initiative of the Romero Institute, however, is a project that it calls the "New Paradigm Institute." The New Paradigm Institute outlines its organizational purpose as "preparing for the time when humanity takes our place in the galactic family and benefits from the technological and societal advances inherent in a post-contact existence."
"Post-contact existence" means meaningful interaction with aliens from outer space, from other galaxies, far away. No demonstrable proof of the existence of such aliens has yet become public knowledge, though I think it is fair to say that those leading the New Paradigm Institute effort believe that the United States government has absolute proof of the existence of such alien life, which the government is suppressing. Here is an invitation from the New Paradigm Institute, urging your own, personal involvement ("UAP" is short for "Unidentified Aerial Phenomena," which is a different name for what used to be called "UFOs," back in the days of my youth):
Get Involved
Join a local Citizens for Disclosure team or start your own to be part of educating the public, growing the UAP Disclosure Movement, and preparing the human family for the cultural shifts that will come with irrefutable evidence of extraterrestrial contact.
Why does this interest in intergalactic aliens seem to be happening right now? Maybe (I think that this is the "New Paradigm" explanation) it's because the truth just can't be hidden anymore. Our recently heightened interest in aliens from outer space might be because there really are, in fact, extraterresterial beings who are here among us, or who have been here, anyway, and who could, and probably would, return and engage in meaningful and helpful interchange with us if we could just get ourselves together enough to be willing to deal with their reality.
That is certainly one possible explanation.
Another explanation for the recent speculation about extraterrestrials - and this is my own best guess - is that our self-created problems on this planet - political, social, economic, and environmental - are so daunting, and so overwhelming, that many people are now entertaining the hope that we can be "rescued" from an ever more threatening reality by the providential intervention of our outer space colleagues, whom believers postulate must surely exist, and whom (we are to hope) will have nothing but our own planetary well-being as one of their main objectives.
Well, to quote Bob Dylan, as I so often do, and utilizing lyrics from the last verse of his 115th Dream: "I just said, 'good luck.'"
