A professor at the University of California, Irvine thinks that the best way to "find some friends" might be to install an Artificial Intelligence program on your computer - or on your phone, I guess, as per the image above, which has been provided by the University. Color me dubious! Regular readers will have heard my objections to this idea before, in a blog posting featuring Mark Zuckerberg, who has the same idea that Professor Tomlinson has.
I have been encouraging everyone to "find some friends," but I have definitely been thinking of REAL, human friends - friends who might be interested in joining up, and starting a group, and then getting involved in renewing our politics.
My blog posting commenting on David Brooks' ideas, cautions against entrusting our future to "professional politicians." Basically, though we use different words, I think Brooks and I are on the same page. My caution, today, is about thinking that we can count on "technology" for the kind of genuine "friendship" we really need - for politics and everything else.
As I am writing out this blog posting, I have not yet watched the video linked below, which is entitled, "The Agenda." I sampled it, though. It suggests - and I am joining in - that "technology" is our "creation," but it is not our "friend."
Watch the video and then think about that!
