#259 / Moving Our World Online

Pictured are several new data centers, built by Amazon, on what was formerly a 1,200 acre stretch of highly productive farmland ouside New Carlisle, Indiana. Seven data centers are currently located there, each larger than a football stadium, and Amazon plans to build around thirty data centers on the property.

The facility will ultimately consume 2.2 gigawatts of electricity - enough electricity "to power a million homes." Massive amounts of water will be necessary to cool all the computer chips that make the whole thing go, which probably means that the food-producing capability of this part of the country will not long endure. If you would like more information, The New York Times has a story that outlines the plans I am referencing

As I have noted before, our human world is being transported "online." Even "cash" is making this migration.

The transposition of our world from what I call the "World of Nature" to a world that we make, is a change that makes our world less "reliable," since when the power shuts down - or when the data centers are sabotaged - everything that we rely upon becomes unavailable - from "money" to our ability to be in touch with other people.

I know I am getting kind of "theological" about this, but we are (and probably not quite realizing that we're doing it) rejecting the "World God Made" for a world that we are building ourselves.

I am pretty sure that this is a huge, huge mistake!
