Green sea turtles (one of them is pictured above) are being threatened by global warming. Hey, no big surprise, right? So aren't we all?
The Summer 2025 edition of "Splash," a publication of the Ocean Conservancy, provides some interesting and additional information about green sea turtles. As it turns out, the sex of a sea turtle is determined by the temperature at which the egg incubates. To quote the article, "Below 82 degrees, the egg will hatch male. Above 88, and the egg will hatch female.... Australia's Great Barrier Reef is the largest green sea turtle rookery in the Pacific, but due to rising temperatures it has seen nearly one hundred female hatchlings to every one male in recent years."
In the human realm, this kind of disparity might be welcomed by any of the males who managed to make it to maturity. Wow! All those females out there, and (as a male) I'd really be in demand.
In terms of sea turtles, however, and the future health of our oceans, this state of affairs is not good news for anyone, including male (and female) sea turtles, and including male (and female) human beings.
The heating up of our oceans is not good news for us.
Because of our continuing devotion to the combustion of fossil fuels, this planet is continuing to heat up, and we, and the green sea turtles, are going to perish if the temperature keeps rising.
But.... You already knew that, right?
