#178 / Love, Actually

That is Celine Song, pictured, the director of a recent film, The Materialists. A long article on Song - and on The Materialists - appeared in the June 16, 2025, edition of The New York Times. The article was headlined, "How Much Are You Worth, Romantically?

The movie revolves around a romantic dilemma. Should the female lead, "Lucy," played by Dakota Johnson, wind up with the rich and handsome "Harry," played by Pedro Pascal, or should "Lucy" reunite with "John," her broke ex-boyfriend with whom she feels a deeper connection. "John" is played by Chris Evans

The "Lucy" character is a professional "matchmaker." Applying her normal analysis - the kind of analysis she utilizes on behalf of her clients, who are looking for her advice and assistance in making the right "match" - doesn't really help her very much. As it turns out, her matchmaking approach utilizes a focus on both "height" and "money." "Swipe Right" for wealth and height is her guiding principle, professionally, but "Lucy" is not, somehow, able completely to discount that "deeper connection" as she evaluates her choice between "Harry" and "John."

"Harry" has, it appears, an undeniable height and wealth advantage. Still.......

I am not much of a "rom-com" aficionado, but I think I'd vote for "Love, Actually," over a commitment to either height or money. Of course, as someone who started off, right out of college, at a maximum height of 5'6," and who has never been wealthy, I guess I may be prejudiced!
