#140 / Top Two On The List

Gandhi is one of my "Five Guys," which means that I get a daily chance to review the poster shown above, which hangs just to the right of the desk where I work, The first two items on the list of the "Seven Deadly Social Sins" are properly ranked, I think.

Since I contend that we live, most immediately, in a "political world," and have titled my daily blog postings accordingly, it makes sense to me that the Gandhi poster puts that admonition about "politics" in the topmost position. Unless our politics is guided by "principle," it's almost certainly going to be guided by the pursuit of "power." When we let that happen, we end us up with the kind of "politics" that Bob Dylan sings about in his song, which is also titled, "We Live In A Political World." Dylan's song is talking about "politics without principle," exactly what Gandhi was warning us about. No surprise, Dylan paints a pretty accurate picture of what that ends up looking like. A "brutal" picture, actually. Click that link to listen to the song.

As for "wealth without work," that goes right along with "politics without principle." In fact, American politics, today, as it is being practiced by our current president and his associates, has elevated the unprincipled pursuit of wealth - both personal and national - into the ultimate goal of his political efforts.

Gandhi is definitely letting us know what the problem areas are.

It's going to be up to us to do something about it.
