Rob Bonta, pictured, is the Attorney General of the State of California. He has indicated an interest in seeking reelection to that office, and he has, apparently, written off the idea that he might run for Governor next year. I am not a complete Bonta fan - and the article from which I obtained the above picture suggests a reason to be at least a little bit skeptical about Bonta's politics.
That disclaimer having been made, let me quote - and endorse - what Bonta recently told The New York Times about our current president's claim that his so-called "emergency powers" allow him to sidestep normal legal procedures:
Rob Bonta, the Democratic attorney general of California, said his state’s tariff lawsuit was similar to its other legal battles with Mr. Trump and came down to the “core issue of executive authority.”
“Our position has been clear, time and time again, that we will not allow this president to exert authority he does not have,” Mr. Bonta said (emphasis added).
I think Bonta has pretty much hit our current president's problem right on the head - or maybe it's our problem, actually!
One of the worst things about our current president is his claim that, "I alone can fix it." As I pointed out in my blog posting on Wednesday, our system of democratic self-government, as defined in the Constitution, has not assigned the president any general power to decide national policy on his own, but assigns him, instead, the job of implementing the policies that the Congress has established through legislation.
I appreciate what Attorney General Bonta has told The New York Times. It is very important that everyone do what is necessary to make sure that our current president is not permitted to "exert authority he does not have."
