Abraham Maslow wrote the following, in 1966: "It is tempting, if the only tool you have is a hammer, to treat everything as if it were a nail."
I think that our current president might profitably think about what Maslow said, to see if there might be any message there for him.
I have previously commented, here in this blog, on the idea that the president's policy pronouncements, and the political priorities he is advancing, seem to constitute a kind of autoimmune reaction to the challenges facing the United States and the world today.
I have a similar thought about the president's defiant shout to the nation, as he rose with his right fist high after the assassination attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania. Here is a description from The Atlantic:
Donald Trump raises a fist. Blood streaks his face. The sky is high, blue, and empty except for an American flag caught in a hard wind. A Secret Service agent has her arms around his waist. The former president’s mouth is open, in the middle of a snarled shout. We know from video footage that he is yelling “Fight!”
"Fight" seems to have characterized our president's approach to his presidential duties, and I don't think, really, that every issue, every opportunity, every challenge should be seen as a "fight."
I am no fan of Richard Nixon, but an appeal for which Nixon is remembered might well be resurrected, now:
Bring Us Together!
I doubt that Donald J. Trump has it in him to do that, but it would certainly be nice if we could all give that a try, ourselves!
I am saying, here, pretty much the same thing I was talking about, yesterday. We need to "find some friends," and then get organized with our friends to start running our own country, again.
Could we all just give that a try?
