Smith wrote the song with Fred "Sonic" Smith, her husband, who died in 1994 at age forty-six. The song was released as a lead single from Patti Smith's 1988 album, "Dream of Life." Reading the lyrics is good, and reading about the song is fine, too. But listen to the song. That's the best thing. The YouTube presentation, below, is a really good way to listen.
