#303 / Government Is Like Sex

Government is like sex? Well, that's what one of Louise Erdrich's characters claims in Erdrich's newest book, The Night Watchman. It sort of rings true:

Listen up. Government is more like sex than people think. When you are having good sex, you don't appreciate it enough. When you are having bad sex, it is all you can think about [p. 183].

It is getting close to November 3rd. And government? It's practically the only thing that any of us are thinking about. That's my personal impression, at least. Maybe I'm unique, but I don't really think I am. I have a very strong supposition that "I'm not the only one."

If Erdrich's analogy holds true, what does that tell us about the kind of government we've been experiencing over the last few years? Bad! That pretty much sums it up. I think our author is on to something here. Bad sex and bad government do have the similarity that Erdrich highlights. That does ring true to me.

In only a few more days, I am hoping we are going to do something about the "bad government" thing. Let's get it together and restore good sex and good government to the United States of America. It's certainly possible.

If we don't, of course, we're definitely f#@ked - and not in a good way!
