I suppose that some environmentalists might be offended by George Carlin's YouTube rant, presented here. He's right, though, that human efforts to "save the planet" seem to imply that Nature depends on us.In fact, quite the opposite is true!
We live, simultaneously, in two different worlds. Ultimately, we live in the World of Nature, a world that we did not create and the world upon which all life depends. Most immediately, we inhabit a "human world" that we create ourselves. Because our human world is the result of our own choices and actions, we can say, quite properly, that we live, most immediately, in a “political world.” In this blog, I hope to explore the interaction of these two worlds that we call home.

As an environmentalist for 40 of my 67 years, I got the same take home message that you state in your comment, Gary. That is, the planet will abide. At that I took no offense; he is right.
ReplyDeleteInitially I cringed when he seemed to mock saving whales or other critters and mentioned all the species that were extinct before humans began their intense spread worldwide100,000 years ago. Carlin said a mouthful but it does not dissuade me from continuing my activism. Not a bit!
I have always been humbled, as a human on this lovely planet in an infinite universe. However, humility does not paralyze and so I continue (conservative that I am) to care and to work to save nature, however and wherever I can.
Yours truly,
A Humble and Committed Environmentalist
