216 / Proverbios y Cantares

I have to say I love Antonio Machado, whose poem, Proverbios y Cantares, expresses with great poignancy what it means, ultimately, to be alive. Another metaphor for the way we create the world by what we do. It's best in Spanish:

Caminante, son tus huellas
El camino, y nada más;
Caminante, no hay camino,
Se hace camino al andar.
Al andar se hace camino,
Y al volver la vista atrás
se ve la senda que nunca
se ha de volver a pisar.
Caminante, no hay camino,
Sino estelas en le mar.

***

Walker, your steps are the only path you have.
Walker, there really isn't any path;
You make your path by walking.
Walking, you make your own path,
And when you turn around and look back
You'll see a path you'll never walk again.
Walker, there really isn't any path
Just your footsteps on the sea.

  1. The poem solves all the questions we've been posing. Maybe there's nothing else to be said after this!
