300 / Kierkegaard

Click on the image for more information on Søren Kierkegaard, the "father of existentialism," and the author of Either/Or, published in 1843.

Either/Or is a profoundly philosophic work, but in the form of what might be called an existentialist novel, contrasting the "aesthetic" with the "ethical" life, and letting the reader decide which is preferable.

Kierkegaard does not provide a "both/and" solution, and we can only imagine that the Lovin' Spoonful must have consulted Kierkegaard's work, before writing one of their most famous songs.
