#329 / I Missed That Quote

Bill Moyers has conducted a recent interview with journalist Naomi Klein, focusing on "Capitalism and Climate Change."

Klein points out that we need to confront climate change and global warming on a "collective basis," and notes that there has been significant political opposition to the idea of "collective" action, in any area of public policy. As an example, Klein quotes Margaret Thatcher, the former British Prime Minister, to the effect that "there is no such thing as society."

I missed that quote, which comes from a Thatcher interview in 1987. I am, however, quite familiar with the concept. We have had some Presidents who have said pretty much the same thing.

While we are, without doubt, "individuals," we are not only individuals. We are inevitably joined together with others, and we cannot survive or prosper except as we work together, "collectively."

In other words, Margaret Thatcher was wrong.

There is such a thing as society!
