Our government was formed as a representative republic, that has recently morphed into a corporate oligarchy.

That fact that the current government of the United States is failing does not mean that democracy is a meaningless concept. It means that a representative republic cannot fully represent all of the people in a large, technocratic, corporate capitalist society. The concept of democracy is still very much alive and possible, if we have the political will to change our economy and our form of government to embrace rule by the people.

In a democracy, we, the people, do not control the government, we are the government. We meet in neighborhood, workplace and bioregional assemblies to formulate and discuss solutions to problems in our lives. Through a system of federated assemblies, those solutions are evaluated, discussed and activated, such that all members of our bioregion (county, city) have a stake in the outcome.

Democracy is about participation, not control.

Michael A.
