I first learned about the fate of places such as New Orleans in college ecology classes in the late 60s. <br /><br />Just as in Santa Cruz, foolish humans have built cities in places with variable geophysical characteristics, flood plains, the slopes of volcanoes, earthquake faults... and much more.<br /><br />The Earth always wins, water always wins, earthquakes always win. Humans are ineffective in attempting to thwart natural processes.<br /><br />The best we can do is to learn about the realities of the world we inhabit and adjust ourselves accordingly, in cooperation with natural processes, not strive futilely against them.Michael A.
