I studied energy balance and EROI in graduate school. Everything we know about ecology and natural energy cycles was written in the 70s and 80s. <br /><br />We've long known that the existing human civilization (if that's what it is) cannot be maintained on renewable (non-fossil fuel) sources. In addition, solar and wind require metals and rare minerals that must be mined and transported with fossil fueled technology.<br /><br />There's no free lunch, not even a relatively inexpensive snack. <br /><br />We not only "must" reduce energy consumption and resource throughput, we will, either voluntarily or of necessity.
