#85 / Is This A Trick Question?

A former elected official from Palo Alto, my hometown, and a friend of mine, sent me the following quote from Joseph Heller's wonderful book, Catch-22

It was miraculous. It was almost no trick at all, he saw, to turn vice into virtue and slander into truth, impotence into abstinence, arrogance into humility, plunder into philanthropy, thievery into honor, blasphemy into wisdom, brutality into patriotism, and sadism into justice. Anybody could do it; it required no brains at all. It merely required no character.

Here is the question my friend posed to me:

To which candidate pictured above does the Joseph Heller quote apply? Pictured are the Republican Party candidates for President in their first television debate on August 6, 2015.

I gave my answer, completely consistent with a recent evaluation of Republican Party politics by columnist David Brooks, but my friend said I was wrong.

It was kind of a "trick question," he explained:

CORRECT ANSWER: All of the above.
