#329 / Smash The Caliphate!

Here is some advice from Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton:

It’s time to begin a new phase and intensify and broaden our efforts to smash the would-be caliphate. This is a worldwide fight, and America must lead it.

So? More war?

The whole world rejects terrorist bombings.

Our flavor of bombings, delivered from airplanes, are terrorizing, too.

What do they say in Raqqa?

Smash the Great Satan.

We can't stop this:

Rescue service personnel working near covered bodies outside the Le Carillon restaurant following shooting incidents in Paris, France, November 13, 2015.
With this:

Massive airstrike against the ISIS stronghold of Raqqa in the country's first act of direct retaliation for the Paris attacks.

  1. False premise. Airstrikes against ISIS aren't meant to stop domestic terrorism in Paris. They're meant to weaken the ISIS military infrastructure. They have an estimated 50,000 troops in Syria [1].

Likening U.S. military actions to terrorism because they are "terrorizing" is pure equivocation.

  2. The notion that we can, or should, "smash" the caliphate is misguided and impossible without putting very large numbers of troops on the ground, and even then, the idea would still live on, perhaps even more powerfully than at present. ISIS has made many enemies, Muslim as well as non-Muslim. We need to engage in old-fashioned real politic, supporting perhaps temporarily anyone willing to take ISIS on, while avoiding a lead role to the greatest extent possible.
