#287 / Discipline

According to Wikipedia, the phrase "to discipline" often carries a rather negative connotation. The enforcement of order – that is, ensuring that instructions are carried out – is often regulated through punishment (which can't help but be negative).

For whatever reason, I have always had a much more positive view of "discipline," which I associate with a life calling or "vocation." Wikipedia does note that the word "discipline" originally referred to systematic instruction given to a group of disciples, to train them as students in a craft or trade.

In fact, my positive view of discipline comes from my focus on "self-discipline." It is exactly that practice that allows us to succeed in whatever endeavors we attempt. If we try to do something, we may or may not be successful, of course, but we will never be successful unless we try, and unless we discipline ourselves to the task at hand. It is through our disciplined action that we create our human world.
