#277 / Self-Government?

The Self Government Foundation, from whose website I took the image in today's blog posting, believes that "seldom have we been so close to ... the failure of the American experiment."

This particular group thinks that new forms of direct democracy might be the best answer to the emerging problems that are putting democracy at risk. If you want to get a sense of the dimension of those "emerging problems," I again recommend the recently-published book by Dana Priest and William M. Arkin, Top Secret America.

I am pretty clear in my own mind that "self-government" has got to be something more than electing the people, who hire the people, who run our lives for us.

Self-government definitely requires that we get involved ourselves.
